Here is our current chart to compare Garmin nuvi models. Garmin as a large data base that can be updated with an easy connection to Garmin Express on a PC or Mac. The usb ports work fine with my other devices (phone data transfer and usb dvd drive/burner)OK you have eliminated a lot on the surface book, how about trying the Garmin on another PC to eliminate that has the issue ? Are you using using/installed the Garmin software? Ive rebooted the computer with no change.

I have purchased a new genuine garmin data lead but the problem remains and it will only allow charging. after each update or restart, wait about a minute because a popup may appear, asking you to restart or telling you it’s loading something else.My surface book wont recognise my garmin nuvi sat nav as a removable disc drive to allow it to be updated when plugged into the usb ports.

Troubleshot the system and plugged in two WD portable drives and a SD Card to check for issues with the ports. Took almost an hour of plugging and unplugging. Tried plugging in the other unit and eventually it was recognized. Software open up and cannot find one of the GPSs. Why can windows find my Garmin nuvi 3490 and why can’t Garmin Express find it? Make sure your device is not just out of battery by plugging it into a power source. I plugged in the GPS and fired up Garmin Express.
